EIC Pathfinder Strategic Plan: Nature-inspired alternatives for food packaging and films for agriculture

What if the materials we use every day to protect our food could come from nature rather than fossil resources?

It’s a question that is becoming increasingly important as Europe looks for more sustainable ways to produce, package and protect food. From agricultural films in the field to packaging on supermarket shelves, plastics play an essential role in today’s food system, but their dependence on fossil resources also creates significant environmental challenges.

EIC Strategic Plan points to Europe’s rich renewable biological resources, including agricultural residues, forestry by-products, algae and other biomass streams, as an opportunity to develop alternatives to fossil-based materials.

This opens the door to a different way of thinking about packaging: not simply asking how we can replace conventional plastics, but how we can design materials that are functional, resource-conscious and better suited to a more circular future.
